When

By Jennifer Hill

When was the time
that you stared into my eyes
and through me
and we fell into a pool
of blue and flesh and souls

Where did you go
when freedom was your wing
and you could fly to anyone’s nest
but never did I see
your shadow pass my tree

Will I again have you
broken-winged and suffering
with all of your pride and despair
bleeding in your eyes--
your perfect blue eyes

Will I stand or jump
off my cliff alone
and refuse you the joy
of knowing my eyes
my flesh
my soul
while you watch me fall
