Last Love

-by Josh Stoner

Sitting by the fire

I remain frozen from you touch

Sparks leap at my ankles

Threatening to burn with their embers

As my mind fades away

My heart is out searching

Over the snow burdened roof tops

Looking for the love I lost

Or rather, the love that was stolen

I handed it to you freely

It went to you looking for protection

And now it sits among the ashes

With the letters I’ve burned

A memory of your smile flashes

In my soul, for my mind is gone

I hold onto life barely

Waiting for my heart to return

But I know you’ve taken it to be yours

And it is no longer mine to have

My eyes are closed and my breath fades

I welcome the eternal rest

A release from the pain you draped me in

Like the torn rob I wear now

But I must leave my heart behind

In the cage you keep it in

Goodbye my love, take care of my heart
