In Between

by Jennifer Hill

Fools rush and professors fall

down the rabbit hole in the middle of the fields

of you and your insane landscape

I cannot fathom you now

like I did so doe-eyed

so innocent

I was ready to explore the regions

that I believed had never been explored

before by man in all of his ambition and

determination

yet there you were

the gatekeeper to my truth

my revelation

and I was powerless to defeat you or

usurp your awesome command.

so I stared at you and touched you

and you looked at me with eyes that

had never seen a woman

but always knew they would devour

her once they did.

the battle began and ended

in your mind

in my mind

before we ever met

and the sad conclusion was

that it was not nearly as sweet

as we had played it out in our minds

with sweat dripping from our foreheads

and the edges of our hair drenched and dripping

while our bodies cooled and glistened

on top of the covers that could protect.
