On The Day Before

by Jennifer Hill

On the day before
all the people were drowning
flailing their arms and panicked feet
in the spinning waters sucking them
into the heavy places
where the water is too cold to freeze.

I stood on the sand
on the day before
and watched the people falling

I thought I could walk
on the turbulent waters
like Jesus walking ghost-like
to his trembling disciples.

But one honest look
turned me away
and your blue-ice eyes sunk down
